We’re all likely familiar with the story of the “Nutcracker”—the holiday classic complete with sugar plum fairies, the great Mouse King and dazzling displays of ballet. Well, a modern dance group is taking that storyline and turning it on its head this holiday season, and it’s all happening just blocks from your The Isle apartment.

On Dec. 15, the “Philly Nutt Crack-Up”—a fusion of dance, theater and comedy—comes to Manayunk for the first time. ContempraDance, a nonprofit professional dance company known for its eclectic repertoire, has performed the show throughout the region and is now set to bring it to Manayunk’s Venice Island Performing Arts & Recreation Center, just two blocks from your The Isle apartment.

The troupe will present its own take on the holiday tale, infused with rap, hip hop, jazz and other modern twists. It will also feature a setting familiar to Manayunk audiences: our very own Philadelphia. All of the characters have been renamed after local icons (the City Hall Dolls, Hip Hoppin Railway Rats and Captain Philadelphia), and you’ll even see appearances by Philly faves like Rocky. The show is sprinkled with references to Philly culture, hot spots, foods, personalities and more, while the music, choreography and storyline were all put together by award-winning artists from right here in our area—so if you’re looking for a theatrical experience that is all Philly, this is the ticket!

If the ballet and classical music that the traditional “Nutcracker” is known for has seemed a bit too tame for you, the “Philly Nutt Crack-Up” may be more your speed.
