The lazy, hazy days of summer can make it quite tempting to throw on your shades, grab a fruity drink and let your mind wander as you soak up some sun. But there’s so much to do and see right here in Manayunk, especially right near your Isle apartment, this summer that you can keep your mind fresh and energized (and still make time for some R&R!).

Art appreciation abounds in Manayunk—from its annual, nationally recognized arts festival this spring to the many galleries and boutiques around the neighborhood that offer one-of-a-kind works of art. Established and up-and-coming artists are also both showcased at the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center. Located just six blocks from your The Isle apartment, the community-focused arts and cultural center offers a robust lineup of programming—artist workshops, lectures and a revolving series of exhibitions.

On that last front, MRAC is about to open one of its biggest annual events, the 11th annual Juried Show. Artists from around the region have been invited to submit their pieces to the exhibition, with a panel of art experts considering each for first-, second- and third-place prizes. Winners or not, many of the submissions will be featured in the show, which will showcase a wide range of art mediums—oil, acrylic, photography, 3D, mosaics, mixed media and more.

The highly anticipated exhibit will open with a reception from noon-3 p.m. July 21, featuring food, drinks and the chance to mix and mingle with the artists themselves and other art lovers in the area. During the event, the winners will be announced and celebrated. Even if you can’t make it to the reception, you can still find time to take in the show, which continues through the end of the month.

And even better—it’s all free! As an accessible community organization, MRAC doesn’t charge admission, though it does suggest a $5 donation if possible.
