Art Abounds in Manayunk

The Manayunk-Roxborough Art Center is one of the cultural centerpieces of the region—and it has a lot on tap for this fall.

MRAC, about one mile from your The Isle apartment, features a new exhibit every month, along with galleries, arts classes, meeting space and much more. The September exhibit, “Generations,” provides insight into the community-minded nature of MRAC, which has been a fixture in the local community for 65 years.

“Generations” is comprised of art created by members of MRAC and their families and is meant to depict the wide range of people the center touches. Pieces on display will be made by everyone from local children to seniors, and will represent all genres of art, showing the wide circle of Manayunk and Roxborough residents whose work is supported by MRAC. The show opens Sept. 9—with an opening reception from noon-3 p.m.—and continues though Sept. 16. If you miss this series, catch “Generations” when it moves to the Roxborough Development Corporation, one mile from your The Isle apartment, starting Oct. 5.

After “Generations,” MRAC welcomes artist William Kosman in “Hope for the Homeless.” Kosman’s brightly colored oil paintings on canvas depict landscapes from around Philadelphia, as well as some from Normandy, France. Kosman will donate all proceeds from the show to Bethesda Project, which offers services and resources to the local homeless population. The show runs Oct. 7-14 at MRAC and then moves to RDC from Nov. 2 to Dec. 3.

All art hanging in the halls of MRAC is for sale and ready for purchase whenever you visit. If you need some décor for your The Isle apartment, a visit to MRAC is certainly in order; buying some artwork online or in a high-end gallery are certainly ways to fill your walls, but supporting the work of MRAC—which is entirely supported by volunteers—is a great way to give back to your community while getting yourself some one-of-a-kind art.
