Three Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in Manayunk

April 16th, 2018
Every April, people around the globe mark Earth Day with organized and informal activities designed to educate people about the importance of natural resources and to encourage them to adopt green-living practices.
Earth Day falls on April 22 this year and, throughout the month, there are numerous opportunities near your The Isle apartment for you to roll up your sleeves, open your mind and spread the word about the environment.
Talkin’ Trees: West Laurel Hill Cemetery, about one mile from your The Isle apartment is home to countless historic graves and it also is a haven for historic horticulture. On Earth Day, the cemetery opens its gates for Talkin’ Trees to give locals an insider’s look at its Great Trees, a collection of oaks and weeping beeches that were planted centuries ago. The cemetery’s arborist will walk visitors through its winding pathway and back through history to tell the trees’ storied past, as well as point out the impact they play on local residents and wildlife.
Spring Clean-Up: From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 7, the Friends of Wissahickon Valley Park will meet at the Bell’s Mill Road entrance to the park, about four miles from your The Isle apartment, for the annual Spring Clean-Up. As the only public road going into and out of the park, the area is a magnet for debris, so roll up your sleeves and help get the park ready for spring. Volunteers will pick up trash, rake leaves, collect branches and more as they bring out the beauty of the park.
Organize Your Own Project: While you can join an already established Earth Day event, why not create your own? Grab a trash bag and head just one block from your The Isle apartment to the Schuylkill River Trail to pick up any litter that you find. The trail connects to the Manayunk Canal Towpath and is a well-traveled hub of recreation, so taking just a few minutes to have it looking its best can help encourage even more residents and visitors to get out and enjoy this outdoor oasis.
