Residents of The Isle know Manayunk is all about community. It’s a tight-knit community with a lot of history. If you’re new to the community, this might seem a bit intimidating, but there aren’t many places in Philadelphia more friendly than Manayunk. A great way to get involved is to give back. There’s plenty of cool and fun ways to use your time and skills to help others. The community is home to several organizations that help people all over the Philly area and always need an extra hand. We made a quick list of some of our favorites that we know our residents would like.
S.O.W.N. – Did you know that 67% of Philadelphians over age 60 report symptoms of depression. S.O.W.N. is a non-profit that has been helping out Philadelphia adults age 50 or older and their families for over 32 years. They focus on providing specialized services to older individuals to prevent isolation, depression, and overall health decline. While donating is always a great way to help, they are regularly looking for volunteers to help facilitate support groups or participate in the board of directors.
Starfinder Foundation – Because of budget cuts and a lack of after-school programs, Philly’s children don’t always have the same opportunities as their peers. Great for residents with a more athletic spirit, this organization uses soccer to inspire social change among Philadelphia youth. The Starfinder Foundation inspires leadership and accountability on and off the field, with a lot of resources geared towards helping kids with their studies. They always need volunteers with different skill sets for sports, tutoring, counseling, and more. If you don’t have a lot of extra time, a great way to still get involved is attending one of their donation-based pickup soccer games or benefits.
COSACOSA Art At Large – This nonprofit works with members of the community all over the Philadelphia area to create and restore public art. Hardly just about beautification, COSACOSA strives to open up a friendly dialogue with all of their pieces based on community concerns, movements, and current events. They promote diversity, inclusivity, kindness, creativity, equality, and personal responsibility. Some ways you can get involved include making a financial contribution, volunteering your time and skills, donating art supplies, and even creating a new COSACOSA project in your neighborhood.
