Mummers Take on Manayunk

New Year’s Day may be over, but we haven’t seen the last of the Mummers this year!

The Manayunk Mummers Mardi Gras Parade returns Feb. 18, with a day full of outdoor festivities celebrating one of Philly’s time-honored traditions. If you’re new to the area and haven’t yet experienced a Mummers Parade, get ready!

The Mummers have been ringing in the New Year in the City of Brotherly Love for more than a century. From string bands to comics, Mummers showcase music, dancing and elaborate costumes, with clubs from around the region competing for top prizes.

The Manayunk event highlights 16 local string bands, who will perform and parade down Main Street. As the bands march, spectators can get their faces painted, snap pictures in a photo booth and take part in other family-friendly activities. Each of the bands will host an after party at a different Manayunk bar or restaurant, where neighbors can enjoy food and drink specials as they mix and mingle with the Mummers and take in more performances.

It’s not all fun and games, though. The event also aims to raise funds for the Mummers organization to help support the annual New Year’s festivities — a great time and a good cause!

The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. and the celebration runs until about 6 p.m. Hope to see you all there!
